Two Signal Corps Telephone Operators (Female) died while in service:

Supervisor Inez Ann Murphy Crittenden (2-CA). Enlisted from San Francisco, California. Buried at Suresnes American Cemetery in France. Supervisor with Group 2.
Cora Helen Bartlett (6-MI). Enlisted from Hillsdale, Michigan. Remains were repatriated and buried at King Lake Cemetery in Hillsdale, Michigan. Operator with Group 6.

The "Hello Girls" — America's first female soldiers — were 223 women recruited to serve as telephone operators for the U.S. Army's Signal Corps during World War I.

The operators played a crucial role in keeping communications lines open on the front lines, sometimes under fire, and in ensuring the success of military operations. Following WWI, the operators fought for nearly sixty years to gain full veteran status.
